Involving the local population
Helvetas' development projects are always carried out together with the population to achieve the greatest possible sustainable impact. Local companies are used for the construction of wells and latrines. In this way Helvetas also makes an important contribution to the development of the private sector. Moreover, Helvetas creates water committees in the villages, which independently operate and maintain the drinking water systems. And the public is educated about the interrelation of water quality, hygiene and health.
Years of experience
Helvetas is active in water and sanitary system projects in about a dozen of its partner countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In Mozambique, for instance, where since 1979 it has helped to build or restore over 2,000 wells in the northern reaches of the country, providing a million people with clean drinking water. In recognition of its efforts, Helvetas received the 2008 Energy Globe Award from former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Common goal
As a partner of this campaign, Geberit is supporting the commitment of Helvetas and thereby directly the UN’s millennium objective in the area of drinking water and basic sanitary services. Cooperating with Helvetas provides Geberit with the opportunity to deepen its social commitment.
